What Happens In An Out Of Body Experience?

By David Eastwood

An out-of-body experience (OBE) is an experience which is characterized by a sensation of leaving one's physical body and observing both the self and humanity from outside one's body. Such experiences are quite frequent in dreams, memories and daydreams. Often in such dreams we feel that we are floating above our body, and can see everything that is happening in the world. Some OBEs happen together with lucid dreaming.

Often people have such out of body experiences when they are under the influence of an anesthetic; or when they are semi-conscious due to some trauma. Out of body experiences can also be induced by drugs. Every individual has a right angular gyrus, located at the juncture between the parietal and temporal lobes. Such experiences can also be induced by stimulating this gyrus electrically. Often, people can have an out of body experience when they are nearly dead. Such experiences are called 'near death experiences'.

The scientist G.N.M Tyrell introduced the term 'out of body experience' in his celebrated work 'Apparitions', in 1943. Later, a large number of writers, scientists and authors alike, have used the term in their works, as they have considered this term to be a better alternative to terms like 'spirit walking' or 'astral projection'. Till now, science has been able to figure out very less about OBEs. And few among the experts have been able to recreate an out of body experience in the laboratory. And this was done by stimulating the human gyrus.

Statistics sat that one out of every ten individuals experience an out of body experience at some particular time in life. But most of them have it when they are about to die. It is claimed that a regular practice of OBEs tend to develop the senses, and the people are able to notice finer details about their lives which they had missed out before.

At times, OBEs are said to be preceded by and/or initiated from a state of lucid dreaming. But there have also been reports of experiences which have been natural and unprompted. In many situations, people who claimed to have had an out of body experience were either asleep, or on the verge of being asleep. But majority of these people said that the sleep was not very deep then, due to many factors like noise, stress, fatigue, etc.

A lot of the ancient civilizations, for example the Indian and the Chinese have talked about out of body experiences. They had written extensively on this topic in their ancient scriptures and texts. But it is true that in recent times, the concept gained popularity and recognition, only when the New Age Movement started.

Different people look for out of body experiences for different reasons. The spiritually inclined ones want to expand their knowledge about spirituality and consciousness. There are some who have social work in mind when they come to experience OBEs. A lot of them just come looking for entertainment or out of sheer curiosity. On the other hand, there are a few who want to harm others through out of body experiences.

Out of body experiences are not very easy to perform. In order to do these, we need the help of mediums, or experts. It is not sure whether these are harmful, but it has been seen that sometimes, such experiences can cause emotional, spiritual, mental or even physical harm. Thus it is not advised to do these alone.

Some people say that the Bible has justified the idea of out of body experiences. They have cited many scriptures which apparently have said so. However, some others have said that in the Bible, such experiences have been regarded as occult practices, and the biggest evidence for this is that it is written in the Bible that God's people did not 'perform' them. People did not have to look for such experiences for their development, or gain; or to get knowledge about the world, and God.
