An Outing With My Own Harley Davidson: Taking A Trip To Italy And Greece

By Jason Pechstein

You know, one time I had the feeling I needed a holiday and I needed it right now. Impulsive, I know, but that is who I am. Who knows, maybe you had that sometimes yourself. You just need a break and if you love to drive your motorbike (like me) then you just need to feel the wind in your face. So I got on my bike with my wife (we both drive a vintage Harley Davidson) and after I packed some stuff we got up and drove away.

I always wanted to visit the Boot (Italy) and the land of the ancient gods (Greece), so I decided my bike would take me there. And thus, I headed for the Italian border. Driving through the mountains and environment of Switzerland was great and my old Harley just sounded right when we climbed the Swiss mountains time and time again. Yes, no matter its age, you can always count on the Harley technology to take you anywhere. Harley owners know they can rely on their machine at any time. And thus, my machine took me to the Italian border close to Lake Como.

Italy was different though. Italians go crazy as soon as they get in a car and you really have to be careful when you drive a bike on the Italian motorways. Some of those Italian drivers tend to go crazy as soon as they get into their cars. Needless to say, when we drove from the north of Italy to Rome, we had some interesting experiences. Especially when you had paid for the toll roads and had to get from 20 lanes into 3... Boy! But then again, I must say that when you drive a machine like a Harley Davidson through the Italian landscape, you also get a lot of attention from the Italians, who love to see a great motorbike like my old Harley.

After we visited Rome and the Colosseum, we crossed the country to the city of Ancona to take the ferry to Hellas (in other words, Greece). We drove through the Greek country and ended up in the hot city of Athens (with a great nightlife by the way), but for us Athens was too humid and too hot, so we didn't want to stay for too long. Thus we drove to Piraeus Harbor and took the (beautiful) ferry to the Greek Island of Crete (an incredible island). We drove around the island and visited some great and historic places. Heraklion, Chersonesos (where we ran into a bunch of young people who were having an incredible party), Chania and Malia (again a lot of young English party animals) were visited and we had a great time.

We criss-crossed the island for a while and couldn't get enough of this place. It is so beautiful. And of course our machines were the talk of a great many small towns when we passed through. I didn't see any other machine like the ones we were driving and literally everywhere people were watching us with a smile on their face. Last thing to mention is that you will love the Greek hospitality and I can personally recommend the Greek mainland and the islands. You will not regret paying it a visit.
