Audition Day--How to Prepare

By Martha Hamilton

If you want to be famous, or a successful artist, you can go for Broadway, or be in a band and be discovered, or become a solo artist who sings and dances. You can be any of these, as long as you have the skills and the talent, plus the right amount of guts. But, bear in mind that you cant become famous in just one day. It takes time, even for the big stars like Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Bono, and Lea Salonga. All of them underwent intense training. Maybe you could improve by just practicing alone at home, but chances are, you will come out short.

One thing that the abovementioned performers have in common is extensive and intensive training. Although they were discovered and became sensations, they still had to undergo rigorous training to improve their skills and talents. Stardom could come your way too. Maybe you could improve just by practicing alone at home, but chances are, your self-training may fall short.

Ask for referrals, if you think your current teacher doesn't fit the bill. Assess your mentors and see if they can actually provide you guidance on your journey to stardom. In workshops and talent centers, you would still need to audition. So you have to be prepared, even just at home, with your parents, or anyone who can support you.

It is always best to ask for references if you think your current teacher does not suit your taste. You can shop around and ask the people within your circle to give you some names. Because it is art, sometimes you need to get the right people to teach you stuff. Maybe they could teach you the basics but not the technical stuff. Of course, you also need to audition if you subscribe to any of the dancing, singing or acting workshop.

You also need a lot of self-assessment. Ask yourself if you have what it takes to become a star? You might have the love for it, but sometimes you have to look for something else to do. Not everybody is meant to be a star. The entertainment world is very harsh; sometimes even the good ones wont get as much chance. Its the reality my friend. So, before you start spending money for lessons, think twice.

Assuming that you are now ready for auditions, make sure that you are confident when going up to the stage, be confident but be polite at the same time. Be kind to the auditioners next to you, they might be your future work buddies. Greet the judges, and when handing your resume, be polite.

Assuming you are now ready for an audition, be confident but be polite at the same time. Be nice to the other people auditioning with you, as they could be your friends for future work. Greet the judges when presenting your resume, be polite. By presenting your pieces to the pianist do the same. It helps a lot, everybody wants a humble artist. Be humble, it will take you a long way.

After the audition, thank the judges. Once the audition is complete, do not just sit and wait for the phone call, you'll never know where you're meant to be sometimes. Resumes are also important for auditions, search the internet on how to make a good resume. There are a lot of sites that you could get information from. For your photos, get a good photographer. It wont cost you much either, itll all be worth it.
